Teaching Log
It was a big adjustment. A teacher stayed absent for three consecutive days and I had to assume all the responsibilities. I struggled the first day with discipline, administration and the content of the subjects that I had to teach. I also struggled with capturing data such as learners being absent, collecting money and issuing textbooks. explaining to the learners that I will be in charge for the next three days presented disciplinary challenges such as learners not wanting to do the work, learners talking while I was giving the lesson and the disrespect learners showed me when I gave them activities to do. The ways that I coped was through my breathing as well as my mentor teachers advice and motivation on how to deal with challenging learners. I utilized various teaching strategies along with my classroom management tools in order to complete the three days of this task. Each day brought new challenges such as learning new content in a short amount of time, how to manage time and dealing with challenging learners.
I felt overwhelmed because this was new to me. I was used to being mentored by someone however in this task I felt like I was the mentor because I had teachers assistants asking me how to do certain tasks. I felt pressured because there was so much admin in the three days that I had to do such as capturing data on how many learners completed their assessments and how many textbooks needed to be replaced. I felt confident in my ability to perform these tasks as I tried my best o implement all the knowledge that I have acquired through my four years of teaching experience.
· Doing the attendance register.
· Completing the list of learners that needs intervention
· Discipline issues in class
· Break duty
· Planning and learning new content that I am unfamiliar with such as life skills.
I overcome these challenges by being consistent and persevering though. I asked experienced teachers how to deal with challenging learners and how to plan the new content in order for me to teach it to the learners.
I would rate myself higher in terms of development of literacy, numeracy and Information Technology (IT) skills. The reason is because teaching mathematics made me improve my skills as a math's teacher. I would also rate myself higher in terms of having sound subject knowledge.
I have improved these competencies by spending more time with each subject and learning the content in order for me to teach the content to the learners. I have improved my literacy, numeracy and IT skills by asking my mentor teacher to teach me content that I may have forgotten.
